In conventional laparoscopy the view belongs to whoever is holding the scope. Orvue is being developed so that it belongs to the surgeon operating.
Laparoscopic surgery is performed through a camera. In most operating theatres that camera is held and directed by an assistant, who must anticipate where the surgeon wants to look and adjust continuously through the procedure.
The result is a running negotiation over the view — spoken instructions, small corrections, and a picture that belongs to two people at once.
Orvue is developing a single-use robotic camera placed through a standard port and directed by the operating surgeon.
The intent is a straightforward one: the person performing the procedure decides what they are looking at, without asking for it.
The device is in late-stage development and laboratory testing. It has not received regulatory clearance and is not available for sale or for clinical use.
