Replacing manual handling with robotic movement is the means. Keeping the surgeon in control of their own view is the point.
A laparoscopic view held by hand moves with the person holding it. Fatigue, posture and attention all sit between the surgeon and the picture they are working from.
Robotic movement removes the hand from that path. What it does not remove is the need for the surgeon to decide where to look — which is why Orvue is designed around direct control rather than automation.
The control scheme is being developed to sit inside the way surgeons already work, rather than asking them to adopt a new one. That constraint shapes the hardware as much as the software.
Control behaviour is being evaluated in laboratory testing. No clinical performance is claimed, and the device is not available for use.
